Talk about confusing news! The media reported about studies showing that the combination of calcium and Vitamin D supplements may extend life, in addition to preventing osteoporosis. But other reports indicated that calcium supplements could be linked to an increased risk of heart attacks. Given such contradictory information, what is a befuddled consumer to do besides pull our hair out in frustration?

Whatever advice you get from your personal trainer, keep in mind that as we age the risk of osteoporosis is heightened. Osteoporosis is a serious and potentially disabling condition that can cause severe fractures. With or without calcium supplements, you need to be concerned about preventing what is commonly known as the “brittle bone disease.”

And if you think that only women should worry about their bones, think again. While it is more prevalent in females, according to National Osteoporosis Foundation one in four men over 50 will break a bone due to osteoporosis. Pretty convincing numbers if you ask me!

Clearly, both sexes are at risk and should be focusing on prevention, because a fracture in adulthood could not only affect your mobility and general function, but also cause damage to blood vessels or nerves, as well as infection of the bone or surrounding tissue, You certainly want to do everything you can to avoid these complications, so preventing osteoporosis in the first place is a must.

She saunters into the gym in the usual fashion – 30 minutes early, wearing her workout clothes and cycling socks. She‘s ready to warm up; but something’s not quite right with this picture. Black and blue bruises darken her face from a nasty fall the night before and she models a brand new, white sling to support her arm from a broken collarbone she sustained in the tumble. Naturally, it matched her ensemble.

Of course we knew about the incident that left Susan worse for wear, but imagine our surprise when we saw her walk into the gym the very next day. Even though she’d suffered a broken collarbone, not to mention numerous bumps and bruises, the thought of missing one day of training at EarthFIT had never even crossed her mind. Oh! Did I mention that Susan is in her late 60’s?

OK. I feel a little like I’m breaking some ancient, cardinal rule by almost disclosing her age (Susan DON’T kill me!), but you just have to appreciate the fact that this sexagenarian didn’t allow her age, gender, height, or injury to stop her from working toward her goal. So what’s your excuse?

Susan started training at EarthFIT about almost 7 months ago. Like many of our clients, she wanted to do something for herself. She has since annihilated her initial goal and is on to bigger and better things. If you ask her what her new goal is, she’ll be the first to poke fun and say “to not fall anymore!” But you know what? That is a valid goal.

It’s a scientifically proven fact that Susan’s choice to continue training will help her recover faster from her injury faster. Exercise gets your heart rate going and as this occurs, more blood flow and oxygen will be sent to the injured area. July 4th marked not only our Independence, but also – as crazy as it sounds – the International Hot Dog-Eating Contest. This year’s winner, a California man, scarfed down 68 hot dogs in 10 minutes. If this record is impressive to you, then you have to know that in a mere 10 minutes, this contestant consumed almost 20,000 calories, more than 1,150 grams of fat, over 400 grams of saturated fat, and 48,300 milligrams of sodium!

Do we even need to tell you what is wrong with this picture?

True, this is an extreme example of a very bad judgment call and most of us will, hopefully, never consume such a whooping amount of calories, saturated fat, and sodium in one sitting. But if you do happen to over-indulge on the typical barbecue fare this summer, you should be exercising to burn off all that weight-piling calories and artery-clogging fat. This may not be the kind of news you want to hear in the middle of the cookout season, but the traditional barbecue foods are not exactly weight and health-friendly, even if you don’t swallow 68 hot dogs in 10 minutes. Greasy hot dogs and brats, hamburgers on a bun, and mayo-based coleslaw and potato salad add up to a lot of calories and saturated fat. Add a six-pack of beer and/or sugary sodas, and you have a nutritional disaster on your hands. In my neighborhood in Beaufort, I’ve witnessed this first hand – without even mentioning desserts like ice cream, brownies, cookies, or s’mores.

Not only does this kind of food, if consumed regularly over the summer months, pile on pounds, but it can also put you at a higher risk for some serious medical conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. On top of that, consuming large quantities of processed meats such as hot dogs and brats, has been shown to increase the risk of colon and pancreatic cancer.

So can you still enjoy summer cookouts in Beaufort, or wherever you may be, while protecting your health and weight management?

Definitely! You just have to make smart nutritional choices. And, don’t forget to exercise regularly, so you can burn off all the calories and fat before they do any serious damage. Here are a few suggestions to keep those pounds off:

1. Be a pit master: For a healthier cookout, opt for a skinless chicken breast or lean fish, and grill some vegetables as well.

“Hey! What’s going on? It’s Ian Hart from Back Pain Relief4Life.com, the Co-creator of Back Pain Relief4Life program and a Back Pain Relief expert. What am I going to do is explain to you about Muscular Imbalances and how that’s the #1 cause for back pain and a lot other issues that comes out. So first off, 85% of the population is suffering from back pain due to Muscular Imbalances and if you don’t know already which I am sure everybody hears 80-90% population has or will be suffering from chronic back pain and those numbers continue to get worse and worse each year as we become more and more sedentary, more and more overweight, and have more stress and pressure put on the body.

Muscular Imbalances

First off, what is Muscular Imbalance? A muscular imbalance is similar to a tug-of-war. You have opposing muscle groups, some muscles in the front, some muscles on the back. Well if you are sitting in one position all day, certain muscles are going to get tight – so let’s say anterior muscles – and then the opposing muscles are going to get weak. So there is going to be a tug of war on the joints putting stress and pressure on the joints consistently and that gets worse and worse over time until a very pivotal point is there is the most stress let’s say on your lower back because all those muscles are connecting around your pelvis, your hips and stress ends up right in the lower back and in the spine. So what we did is we have our pain pyramid right here.

Muscular Imbalances

So let us say someone sitting all day, they have tight hip flexors, tight abs or weak abs as well, their back becomes weak, the muscles start to atrophy, the nerves in the back get impinged upon, there is lack nutrients and blood flow to that area. So you can see the front of the body is tight and strong and then the back is weak and atrophied. So when we go pick something up, you compensate on that movement. Those muscular imbalances lead to compensation. And when you compensate repeatedly, that leads to dysfunction in your movement patterns, and when you have dysfunction, that leads to pain. Not always, but most in time. Studies have shown that people who have abnormalities in spine don’t actually have any pain, whereas people who don’t have abnormalities in spine, they are actually living with pain. So it’s hard to tell exactly where that pain is coming from, but what we do know is, is that if you do certain specific exercises to help stretch the tight muscles and strengthen the weakened muscles, then you can actually get relief all around, not only on the back, but also the hips, the knees and the ankles because everything is connected – if you think about it, you have major nerves coming out of your spine that lead to your body and those transport nutrients and oxygen and all this other things that we need to have healthy and strong bodies. Now, what we are going to do is put a couple of exercise that you can do just pictures of them below and those are some things that can give you almost immediate relief and of course just moving your body is going to give you immediate relief, but these are specific exercises that are going to target those areas that you would need to help eliminate that back pain, and help you feel strong and just loosen up a little bit. A Threat To The Security Of Our Food

I have known for some time now what has been happening with our food supply and a few months back with in two day period, I ran into 2 separate people in the community that had family members who were farmers and became directly affected by what is going on with the food supply in this country.

The people that I spoke to were telling me about their family members who decided to use the GMO seeds and certain pesticides back in the day when no one knew the effects. The farmers ended up with cancer and died. These same chemicals are in 80% of the food that we eat today and everyone is wondering why people are getting sicker and sicker. Most importantly, no one really knows what the long term consequence are for ingestion of GMO’s. We know for sure that there is a massive uprising of auto immune disorders and sensitivity to foods.

The only way to change is to start eating organic locally grown food that is free of GMO, pesticides and harmful additives and preservatives. The only issue is that a bill has yet to be passed forcing the transparency of GMO food that are in our super markets. “Hey! What’s going on? It’s Ian Hart here the EarthFIT blog and I am going to go over today Improving Flexibility. A lot of times people are tight and they ask “what can I do to get more flexible, how come I am not getting more flexible?” Well, we have flexibility in our training but that is not our main focus. Our main focus are burning fat and getting people results. So, what I am going to do though is explain to you how you can continue to improve your flexibility on your own.
First off, if you train here you already know that you gotta to warm up. Before working out you gotta warm up, but that’s the same for stretching. You can’t stretch on cold body, it’s actually not beneficial for you and you won’t get results. For stretching, you gotta have enough blood flow and oxygen to the body where your muscles are heated up, your joints are heated up and they’re supple, and you have ability to stretch them.

So again warm up: a warm up should be a minimum of 5 minutes where you are sweating, breathing hard and you are loosened up. Then, just like training, you want to do repetitions. So I am going to go just out there and say OK: 3 set of 20-30 second holds to see results – to see progressive results, if you only hold it for 10 seconds, you’re not going to see that stretch elasticity happen in your muscles. It’s actually gotta to hold it past that and that’s where you see the release in the muscles so you are increasing your flexibility. So above 12 seconds minimum to see results research has shown. But, 20-30 seconds is probably going to be the best, and above 30 seconds is not really going to give much results.

Then it’s gotta be 3 times a week or more. Two times a week you will probably see a little bit of results but 3 times a week you’re going to see that more often. It’s gotta be progressive. Just like everything else, you got to add a little bit more stress to it. So when you do a Sit and Reach (when you’re reaching for your toes), you got to push yourself a little bit more, you got to reach even further and got to force yourself to stretch. So you actually feel a little bit more in your legs, a little bit more on your hamstrings than you did last time. And that’s how you’re going to stretch your muscles and move further and increase your flexibility. You have to do the same stretches over too, so your body adapts to whatever you are doing, or gets better to whatever you are doing. You have to do the same stretches and attack the same muscles to see improvement in them.

And then target the tighter muscles too. So if you have tight muscles you want to target those muscles because you’re probably going to get most benefit out of targeting those tight muscles where you know you’re inflexible. And this is common for most people that are tighter in their pecs – doing arm stretches: arms back, hands back and pulling the elbows back. Hamstrings and calves are also tight, but it depends on the individual as well. So, this just that one aspect that you can understand when you stretch to improve your flexibility:

– Warm up
– Do 3 sets of 20-second repetitions of the same exercise
– Three (3) times a week, in a progressive manner (so you see yourself going further each time whether it feels uncomfortable or not you gotta feel discomfort to actually see results in stretching and health and fitness)
– Do the same stretches; and
– Target tight muscles.
